This was an exploration on signal degradation and ways to create parameters to recreate specifically the destruction of i-frames and analog color distortion. An additional feature I added to this project was the addition of hand gestures in order to operate the changes in a way that I thought was interactive. You can mix and match options to similar to a mini synthesizer to make your own image and even reset the degradation to renew the image and start a new sequence.
I had some test footage from my video synthesizer to see how color information reacted when changed through it. I used this as color reference and change when creating different methods of video manipulation. Something I noticed is that if I was just manipulating color information a large portion of the information would stay intact and the signal would just sort of struggle to maintain some sort of consistency.
Inspirations for this were people such as Tachyons+ and i-frame editing programs that have been common in different video encoders and other open source projects.
What I was really struggling with initially was creating a fluidity between hand motions and user controllability. In the end I settled with using recognition of two hands allowing the user to mix and match between with Media pipe hand tracking. Head tracking actually became quit important as instead of the information being randomly “destroyed” or manipulated it was instead influenced by the head tracking data and it’s positional coordinates creating an interesting delay and feedback loop to where it felt like one’s movement is influenced by the actual image on screen rather than just a filter in front of it.
I used this guide by Paketa12 to learn the UV maps and implement them as the most effective way to visually replicate data-moshing as a technique in Touch designer. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MJ71LyBAjk)
